Conventions provide us with an opportunity to learn, and we always come away with information to help us better do our jobs. But we also try to get a feel for the local culture whenever we travel. Micah Antanaitis created a top 5 list of things both industry specific and culturally related, that struck him about his trip this past spring to the AIA convention in Philadelphia:

1. Taking a step back and seeing the American architectural world from a broader perspective, being reminded of the diversity of our field and the various approaches to design, and being reminded of the great impact on the social and built environment that architects have.
2. Eating (and walking) our way through Philadelphia: Reading Market for lunch (donuts and Philly Cheese Steaks) and picking different dinner spots at night - English Pub, Italian, Steakhouse.
3. Architectural tours: One focused on socially conscientious development in economically challenged neighborhoods and one focused on 20th century design (including works by Kahn and Frank Lloyd Wright).
4. Unexpectedly running into old college classmate.
5. Seeing the diversity of topics that were covered - from very high academic conceptual sessions (3d printing combined with biological engineering to nuts and bolts issues (ADA compliance and acoustical performance).
