Each year we establish a theme that provides a focus for us that will, in some way, make us more effective architects and, maybe more importantly, better, happier, and more productive individuals. From "stretch" to "enjoy" to "serve", we've dedicated quality time to self-exploration in a variety of ways and have found our efforts very rewarding. We expect this year's theme of "DIG" to be equally thought provoking and beneficial.
Some years ago we began having every employee take the "StrengthsFinder" assessment from Gallup. We wanted to identify everyone's strengths to make sure that we focus not on addressing weaknesses but on leveraging what each of us can do REALLY well and how we can apply those strengths to our craft of being great architects. So the challenge for 2019 is for each of us to DIG deeper, go further -- be curious about how we can better use our gifts to create special places.
Just like Jiro, the 85 year-old Sushi chef profiled in the Netflix documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi", we are in a lifelong pursuit to develop our craft, not because it is our "job" but simply because it is an integral part of who we are.
