Opening Doors
Jan 20, 2014 Ben Lorance, AIA, LEED, AP, CDT Office News

We come in, we go out. A door is just a door, right? Think again. When you break it down, this simple object that we interact with every day can be very diverse when looked at in detail. And when you consider how critical it might be if that door you want to enter leads to the emergency room, or needs to easily swing in or out to accommodate medical personnel on the go, you begin to see a simple door as a much more integral component in the overall design of a healthcare facility.

I’m in the midst of a 40-hour, very comprehensive course that covers everything you ever wanted to know about doors, hardware, frames, finishes, standards, codes, service and more. I’ve learned that there’s an infinite number of functions and hardware combinations a door can provide and it’s important to work with someone who can analyze the requirements and match the right door components with the need. After 40 hours of education on the subject, I may not receive any type of official certification, but I guarantee that everyone at JJCA will be calling me the doorman!
